Sunday evening at the garage, the Vancouver Canucks played a solid all around game against the last place Colorado Avalanche. The Avs had played in Edmonton the previous night, and looked sluggish early. Vancouver pounced on them, grabbing an early 2-0 lead and they never really looked back.
Newly re-signed forward Alexander Burrows led the way, continuing his goal scoring tear, with his 7th goal in his last 7 games. The former ball-hockey star was all over the ice last night, blocking shots and creating turnovers. He was even called for two roughing penalties following a late scrum.
With their 9th home win in a row, Vancouver tied a 16 year old club record. I don’t know if they keep track of these kinds of stats, but the Canucks could be the first team in history to have lost 9 in a row at home, and then gone on to win 9 in a row at home in the same season. Canucks colour man Tom Larscheid was positive, postgame last night, that his beloved Canucks were in a class a of their own, at least when it came to this stat.
Speaking of milestones, with a point on the 4th Canuck tally to put the game away, defenseman Mattias Ohlund surpassed Jyrki Lumme and Dennis Kearns for most career points by a Canuck defenseman. Despite reaching the milestone, the 6’2” Swedish defenseman was more focused on the 2 points he helped his team clinch with another victory.
Vancouver is now two points behind the Chicago Blackhawks for 4th place in the Western Conference. They have a game in hand on Chicago as well. They also move to within five points of the division lead, and they get to play the division leading Calgary Flames one more time. Vancouver is in pretty good shape, as they have a pretty favourable schedule. For instance, they face the last place Avalanche another three more times.
Could the division crown be a possibility? We will find out soon.
