Chances are you've already made your plans for this Canada Day long weekend- either you're up at the lake taking a dip or barbecuing in the backyard. ON the off chance that you're sat in front of your computer RIGHT NOW, we have help. It's not too late to get outside and enjoy the summer. Here's what's going on in and around Vancouver today.
If you're looking to get some unique new togs for summer, this is
the place to do it. Showcasing over 110 local artists and designers,
Portobello Market is a great place to find locally-designed clothing
and accessories, as well as art, housewares and more. Admission is
$2, free for kids under 12, open from 12 pm- 6pm, at Rocky
Mountaineer Station.(map)
Everybody's Scots today, as the annual
Highland Games, the Province's longest running games event,
takes place at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam. Join the United
Scottish Cultural Society, as they host traditional Scottish
competitions, such as caber tossing, solo and band piping, and of
course, highland dancing. Enjoy traditional Scottish foods such as
short-bread and haggis (it's delicious, we promise!), and also enjoy some
cheer with your kinfolk in a traditional beer garden. The event takes
place from 10 am to 6pm, with general admission costing $12 (less for
children and seniors). Remember, if you're Scots or even pretend
Scots, slap on the sunscreen – you'll burn easy! (map)
If you're feeling particularly
patriotic this weekend, you may want to head out to Port Moody's
annual Golden Spike Days Festival, which celebrates the driving of
the last rail spike during the initial construction of Canada's
transnational railroad. Traditional railsports, such as spike
driving and handcar racing, will be on display, as well as
exhibitions on gold-panning, can-can dancing and many more
activities. Music, food and more entertainment go from 11 am – 6
pm. Admission to this family-friendly festival is free. For more info
visit http://www.goldenspike.ca.
Though we hardly think the end of June
should mean the end of your biking days, why not take some time today
to celebrate the end of bike month with a ride around the city. Check
our guide to biking in the city for some great routes and
suggestions.
If you'd rather watch other people roll around, make your way to
Minoru Arena (map)
in Richmond, where Vancouver's first female flat-track roller derby
league presents the Bad Reputations vs the Faster Pussycats.
Featuring beer garden, and demo guests. Show starts at 5:30 pm,
tickets are $20 at the door. For more information at
