There is something to be said for authenticity. Run by a Mexican family, the Mouse and the Bean can't do anything but serve true Mexican cuisine, simple and tasty. The charming restaurant is located in the basement of the Dominion Building on the corner of Cambie and Hastings in downtown Vancouver.

Ordering at the counter, you will notice that the average taco is hard to find - expect items like sincronizadas (like small Mexican pizza sandwiches) and huraches (corn tortillas doused in toppings and sauce). If you are lucky, the front counter will be manned by a friendly gentleman named Cesar, who will gladly explained any of the menu items to an "amigo". Unlike many Vancouver establishments, The Mouse and the Bean doesn't attempt any sort of culinary fusion. This fare is simple. Tortillas. Beans. Chicken. Mole sauce. Just good food. If you are feeling adventurous, order your meal with habanero sauce and prepare yourself for a little rise in body temperature - it's hot stuff! Top off your meal with an authentic soda, direct for Mexico, and you have yourself one south-of-the-border experience you won't forget.
